BRAIN POWER: HELP RESTORE MEMORY

We All Forget

Everyone has memory loss of some degree. It’s not just the old who forget things. The fast pace of a stress filled world leaves even the young absent-minded at times. I’m not talking about dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, which affect many of our elderly with memory loss, speech impairment, and poor judgment. I’m talking about memory loss in general.

Many things can lead even the young population to forget things on a regular basis. Side effects from medicine, a vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol abuse, thyroid problems, dehydration, and depression can all cause a memory loss which is completely reversible absent the obstacle. Short term memory loss is completely normal for anyone, but it only gets worse as we age.

Things We Can Do

There are things we can do to improve our memory and our brainpower. Things like exercise to manage stress and prevent strokes can reduce the loss of memory. People who eat their fruits and vegetables can keep their brain healthier. Omega 3 fats reduce risk of stroke and memory loss. People who are socially active with their family and friends have better memories. If we manage our stress levels, this will vanish the present of the stress hormone known to damage the brain over time. Sleep is a big factor for memory building. Without it we can’t store new memories properly.

Things to boost our brain power will improve memory. Read things that challenge you to think. Play games that have a strategy level like chess or word puzzles. Learn something new to improve your brain function. Take a study course in something that interest you. Do anything to keep you thinking. As the old saying goes, use it or lose it.

Write Things Down

Write things down. Journals are very helpful and can be read back to recall an important event. Make checklist for grocery lists and things you need to do. Write appointments or events on a calendar so you don’t forget an important date. Leave yourself notes to remind you of things you don’t want to forget. Keep things in a familiar place. Don’t confuse yourself with guesses. Always keep your keys, glasses, etc., at the same location.

As someone with my own problems with memory loss, I can tell you many of these tips I have tried myself. The ones that have been most effective for me is journal keeping and study courses. And writing things down can always be retrieved later to recall a memory. Just try to remember where you put these handy little notes.
